The UK Government has passed new legislation so that waste movements are digitally tracked.  New digital waste tracking replaces paper waste transfer notes. This is mandatory for receiver (disposal) sites from 1st October 2026 and for waste carriers from 1st October 2027.  

In terms of the nations within the UK, the rules apply to receiver sites in England and Wales from 1st October 2026 and for Scotland and Northern Ireland from 1st January 2027.

This is the first part of the digital waste tracking system.  Waste carriers will also need to report from 1st October 2027 and once the full chain is created, a digital tracking number will be applied to each waste movement and will follow the load through to its end point. 

If you are a waste receiver in the UK and have a licence or permit, you have to digitally report to Defra on the incoming loads to your site(s).  

This applies across the waste industry and includes general waste, recycling, aggregates, sewage, metals, liquids and indeed all the EWC codes.

You will have to report on the type of waste, its weight, the disposal code, the container type and quantity, carrier details and the receiver details. When you report each waste load, it will be recorded by DEFRA and will receive an individual tracking number.

Defra have created a spreadsheet which waste receivers can complete and submit.  This will be available for 12 months from October.  The spreadsheet is free but quite complicated and you will need to complete it and submit within 48 hours of a load arriving. 

MyWastetracker is an automated software system which has been linked to Defra's API already and is much simpler for day to day reporting. 

MyWastetracker has been fully approved within the PAT testing system and is listed on Defra's list of suitable software providers.

What this means in reality is that as you log a load arriving at site, you click a couple of buttons on your computer and the reporting is automatically done for you. It is significantly quicker and easier than using their spreadsheet.
